Among the most recent of their projects has been to provide a recreation center in the old Friendship Hall where the young folks can play basketball, have plays, and where a part of the summer recreation program can be held. As these lines are being written, all children who wish to learn to swim are being transported to the Scottdale Y. M. C. A. This was made possible through the Lions Club providing free bus transportation. These are just two typical examples of this organization’s generosity and consistent interest in the citizens of tomorrow. Since the War two new organizations have been chartered. They are the Lieutenant Wayne S. Forsythe Post No. 790, American Legion and its Auxiliary. Veterans from in and around Smithton gathered early in 1946 and decided to form a veterans organization. It was decided to form an American Legion Post so both World Wars I and II veterans, whether their service was overseas might be eligible. An American Legion charter was applied 1946 and granted. It was decided that the name of the Post was to be the Wayne S. Forsythe Post in honor of the son of Martin Forsythe of Smithton. Wayne died in the service. The Post has been called on quite often to conduct military funerals for returned deceased veterans and discharged deceased veterans. The Post has also been active in Memorial Day services. The first officers were: John H. Kruper, commander; Dom Curra, first vice commander; Dave Lett, second vice commander; Henry Johnson, adjutant; William Barthels, finance officer; John Delaini, service officer; Blair Barthels, chaplain; Charles Seglowich, historian; H. E. Wagner and John A. Zaffy, sergeants-at-arms; L. A. Mologne, James Crilley and Clarence Durstine, executive committee. The Lieutenant Wayne S. Forsythe Post No. 790, American Legion Auxiliary was organized on Feb. 3, 1948, in the Lutheran Church after two unsuccessful attempts to do so at meetings held the previous month. Sixteen women attended the meeting conducted by Mrs. Flossie Axel, president pro tern, who had been appointed by Post Commander Charles F. Seglowich. The results of the election were: Mrs. Margaret Luppold, president; Mrs. Pauline Bove, first vice president; Mrs. Martha Luppold, second vice pdesident; Mrs. Anna Runkle Ropp, chaplain; Miss Pauline Curra, secretary; Mrs. Ethel Forsythe, treasurer; Mrs. Donna Kruper, historian; Mrs. Frances Vidale, sergeant-at-arms. When Mrs. Luppold moved from our locality before serving her full term of office, Mrs. Pauline Bove assumed charge and completed the term and served the next year also as president. The meetings are held in the Methodist Church the second Monday of each month.
